UTM parameters stripped from a URL: how to restore them
If UTM parameters disappear, a redirect, shortener or theme probably dropped the query string. Rebuild from a clean destination and test checkout.
Steps
-
Paste the live campaign URL and list each hop
Write down whether query parameters survive redirect 1, the PDP, cart and checkout. That list tells you whether to fix the shortener, the theme, or the destination path.
-
Clean leftover tracking, then rebuild UTM
Use URL Parameter Cleaner on the canonical product or collection path. Then use UTM Link Builder with lowercase source, medium and campaign. Do not stack two UTM sets.
-
Test add-to-cart with the new URL
Confirm utm_source is still in the address bar on the cart. If it vanishes, stop spending and fix the theme or app that strips query strings.
-
Shorten only after the full URL works
If the caption needs a short link, generate it from the working UTM URL and retest the final hop. Save both URLs in the ad sheet.
Find where the query dies
Open the campaign URL and watch the address bar through the first redirect, the product page, cart and checkout. If utm_source is gone on hop one, the shortener or a 301 is the problem. If it survives the landing but dies in cart, the theme or an app is stripping query params. CrossKit does not inject analytics; it only helps you rebuild a clean URL.
Stacked parameters look like “stripping”
An old fbclid plus a new UTM set can make reports look empty because sessions split. URL Parameter Cleaner removes leftover click IDs so UTM Link Builder writes one set. Do not append UTM onto an already shortened link and expect Shopify to see it.
Redirects that drop the query
Handle changes, trailing-slash rules, and “smart” 404s to the homepage often drop ?utm_*. Point the campaign at a live product path, then add UTM. If you must shorten, shorten the finished UTM URL and test the final hop. This page does not invent click counts.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why did parameters vanish only after checkout?
Some payment apps open a new domain. Your analytics may still have captured landing UTM even if checkout hides the query. Confirm in the session report, not only the thank-you URL.
Should I put UTM on the short domain?
No. Rebuild from the Shopify destination. UTM on the short domain often never maps to the store session.
Does URL Parameter Cleaner remove UTM too?
It can strip leftover tracking. Rebuild UTM afterward on purpose so you keep one intentional set, not yesterday’s click IDs.
