Shopify SEO Checklist for Cross-Border Stores: 20 Steps to Rank Globally
Why cross-border Shopify SEO needs a different playbook
Ranking a single-country Shopify store is straightforward. Ranking across the US, UK, Germany, and Japan simultaneously introduces hreflang, multi-currency URLs, localized content, and region-specific backlinks. This Shopify SEO checklist covers everything you need to rank globally.
Part 1: Technical SEO (steps 1-8)
1. Set up hreflang correctly
Use Shopify Markets or a third-party app to add hreflang tags. Each language-country combination needs its own tag: <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-US" href="..." />
2. Choose the right URL structure
Subdirectories (/en-us/, /de/) are better than subdomains for SEO. Shopify Markets handles this automatically.
3. Optimize page speed
International visitors face higher latency. Compress images with the Image Compressor, use WebP, and minimize third-party scripts. Aim for LCP under 2.5 seconds.
4. Submit localized sitemaps
Generate a sitemap with hreflang annotations for every language version. Submit to Google Search Console for each country property.
5. Add structured data
Product schema with price, availability, and currency for each market. Use Organization schema with multi-language sameAs links.
6. Fix broken internal links
Run the Link Checker to find 404s and redirect chains — these hurt international indexation.
7. Set up geo-IP redirects carefully
Use a soft banner, not a hard 302 redirect. Googlebot crawls from the US and will never see your non-US pages if you force-redirect.
8. Use a CDN
Serve static assets from a global CDN (Cloudflare, Fastly) to reduce TTFB for international visitors.
Part 2: Content & keywords (steps 9-14)
9. Don't machine-translate everything
Google penalizes auto-translated content. Use our Listing Translator for product pages, but localize blog posts and landing pages with native speakers.
10. Research keywords per market
"Water bottle" in the US ≠ "Trinkflasche" in Germany. Use the Keyword Miner to find local search terms.
11. Localize meta titles and descriptions
Each language version needs unique meta tags. Don't reuse English titles with Google Translate.
12. Create market-specific blog content
Write about local trends, holidays, and regulations. A "Black Friday" post doesn't help in Germany — write about "Singles' Day" or "Weihnachtsgeschäft" instead.
13. Build local backlinks
Get links from .de, .fr, .jp domains. One German backlink is worth more than ten generic English ones for your German rankings.
14. Optimize for voice search
Voice queries differ by language. Use natural question-formatted headings in each language.
Part 3: Conversions & UX (steps 15-20)
15. Show local currency and payment methods
Klarna in Germany, iDeal in the Netherlands, Alipay for Chinese visitors. Payment method mismatch is a top-3 checkout abandonment reason.
16. Localize shipping and returns info
Make delivery times, costs, and return policies visible per country. German buyers expect 14-day return rights by law.
17. Use local social proof
Show reviews from the visitor's country. "Verified purchase in Germany" builds more trust than a generic review.
18. Test your checkout flow
Use the Listing Checker to validate that all product pages across markets are live and correctly configured.
19. Monitor Core Web Vitals per region
LCP in Germany might be 2x slower than in the US if your server is in Virginia. Use a CDN and monitor region-specific performance.
20. Track international rankings separately
Set up Google Search Console properties for each country. Use GA4 segments to compare conversion rates by market.
